Research Areas

Mechanical design – Research in this area focusses on creating innovative new products and inventing new applications from existing technology. Activities are directed towards generating new concepts and integrating dissimilar technologies to combine into new systems which can be packaged as a product.

Manufacturing- The major focus in the manufacturing R&D is additive manufacturing technology which is also called 3D printing. Designing the systems for additive manufacturing requires god amount of fundamental research in materials, systems and mechanics.

Materials- Supplementary to additive manufacturing, materials technology is focussing on new composite and superior materials. Tribology is another area of research involving the interaction of materials in contact.

Controls- Research in this area focusses on devising control systems to automate or create mechatronic systems for specific or general applications. To enable systems to exhibit intelligent, goal-oriented behaviour, and develop innovative instruments to monitor, manipulate, and control systems

Solid Mechanics- Theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects of continuum mechanics in solids including elastic and plastic studies of all range of materials from metals to polymers.

Fluid mechanics – Computational fluid dynamics is a growing field due to improve computational power and applications in aerospace, wind energy and energy systems. Focus is on improving the mathematical methods and devising new methods to solve complex problems.

Energy systems – Research focus in areas like Thermal systems management in battery management, solar, wind, combustion. Research in this field is surging with the emergence of the Electric vehicle and renewable energy systems.

Dynamics – Response of mechanical systems to external and internal excitations. Vehicle dynamics, acoustics, vibrations are some areas of study.

MEMS / Nano engineering – Micro Nano Engineering conduct fundamental and industry-relevant, interdisciplinary research on micro- and Nano-scale sensors, moving mechanical elements, microfluidics, materials, processes & systems that take advantage of progress made in integrated-circuit, bio, and polymer technologies with emphases on basic sciences such as heat transfer, fluidics, optics, quantum mechanics, dynamics and control.

Ocean engineering – Design of systems for marine applications – vessels, submarines. Research seeks to better understand, protect, and utilize the oceans, which cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface.

Mobility, automotive and transportation – Design, development of automobiles, transportation and mobility systems is a separate research field which involves systems engineering and engineering methodologies.

Biomechanical engineering – Intersection of mechanical engineering with biology, a fast-growing field with a lot of prospects.
